This is a Green Tree Frog who has a genetic abnormality in which yellow pigment is not produced. Below the frog's epidermis or the outer layer of skin, there are three layers of cells called chromatophores. The bottom layer consists of cells which produce melanin which appear black or brown. The middle layer contains cells which are crystalline, gray in color but which appear blue when reflected back through the skin. This reflective layer is responsible for the iridescence in frogs. The top layer produces yellow pigment.Take away the yellow and you have blue. There appears to be some yellow pigment in the nose area of this frog which was captured in a wetland environment located in Woodbridge Virginia.

Welcome to Art Cole's Photography. As a photographer Art has a passion for photographing all types of subject matter, but gravitates towards Nature Photography. He has shot digitally since 2000 and enjoys taking advantage of this dynamic photographic medium and uses degrees in Commercial and Studio Art as a foundation for the images he captures. He also loves to take advantage of the many photographic opportunities that exist in the Washington DC Metro area in which he currently resides. Although he shoots a great deal in the DC area he will from time to time venture out of the region to discover and capture new dynamic images.
